Help the Ummah

(This opportunity to help the Ummah was brought to my attention by Rabia Lari)

How can YOU help the Ummah?

Apparently, Muslims all over the world have been stumped by the following riddle:

  • It begins with the letter M.
  • It is five letters long, in BOTH English & Urdu.
  • Women do it once in a lifetime; men do it three times a day.
  • It's brighter than the sun and darker than night.
  • It is halal to drink, but haram to eat.
  • AND it's mentioned in the Qu'ran five times.
What is it?

my personal guess is "might", but then again I also have a feeling that there is no answer...maybe it is just some shaikh's trick to get us all to read the Quran more??

HELP! I think if we put our heads together as an ummah we can figure this out! its all about team work. there's no I in team nor in ummah.

Okay so at first i thought mecca b/c its 5 letters, hajj is once in your life, and mecca cola is halal to drink. but the other stuff doesn't make sense.

then i was thinking ... muslims recite surahs out loud in salat three times a day... and usually men lead salat? does that give us a clue?

come on ppl let's figure this out!

spout -- thank you for driving the ummah crazy by posting this riddle.

This is what I found:

In Persian:

māyūn : money.

A woman handles money 'once' in her life (ie, dowry). Men handled it all the time (3x). Also, there is the pun with malum, which means 'to recognize'. In strict Muslim society, a woman is recognized once in her life (marriage), while a man is has three events of recognition each day (home --->work --->home).

There also is the myth (Persian) of Farīdūn's cow. The cow can be eaten (halal), but it's milk cannot be drank (haram)..

Money is brighter than day (makes men swarm to it) and darker than night (can ruin men).

مایون appears 5 times according to two Quranic search engines and one frequency list.

that's pretty good, but...

the riddle said: "It is halal to drink, but haram to eat."

and amira said "There also is the myth (Persian) of Farīdūn's cow. The cow can be eaten (halal), but it's milk cannot be drank (haram).."
